Galati-Braila is the second largest urban agglomeration in Romania. Be it economic, social or administrative conurbation Galati – Braila manifests as a “center of gravity” of the South-East of Romania. The distance between Galati and Braila is only 23 km.
As a population, according to statistics provided by the INS, out of a total of almost 2.8 million people in the South-East, Galati and Braila brings together 960,000 inhabitants. Galati and Braila counties account for over 32 percent of the population engaged in various economic activities in the South East of Romania, of which the more population is involved in industrial activities.
Strong points of conurbation Galati – Braila, are those related to health infrastructure and the quality of life. In terms of healthcare infrastructure, the highest number of hospital beds is found in the Galati – Braila, with over 4,800 locations in the approximately 14,000 beds in the region, ie 34.6 percent of the total. On the quality of life, Galati – Braila held late last year over a third of the housing and habitable surface of the region, most local water installations and gas networks for consumption, over 900 km municipal streets and 1,311 hectares of green spaces.
Also, Galati and Braila hold the longest public and modernized road from the region. Similarly, the two counties together have the longest track electrified and only broad gauge railway, which facilitates the transport of goods in and from Eastern Europe and Asia.

  • From steel to mechatronics

Galati is the most important center of maritime industry. Shipyard “Damen” SA assembles and repair vessels up to 65,000 dwt. Also here is the largest steel factory, Ispat – SIDEX SA, which together with other specialized units form a strong iron and steel sector. Even if Galati is recognized as a city with a tradition of steel and shipbuilding, lately have been developed new areas such as multidisciplinary mechatronics and robotics. The new and modern directions had positive influence on economic growth of the area.

  • Commercial traffic hub

Galati is one of the largest hubs of commercial traffic from Romania, connected to the European Union through the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal, which links the North Sea to the Black Sea. The location of the industrial park near the border with Moldova and Ukraine, is motivated by access to the national road DN 2B and by that rail transport in the area which is connected to both networks with broad gauge railway used in some CIS countries Asian and standard railway networks in Europe.

  • Transport facilities

  • Tunnel under Danube in project faze

It intends to build a tunnel under the Danube which would make the connection between Tulcea and Galati, in this way avoiding the area and also the fee payment for the ferry currently operating. Work is expected to last at least two years. According to Galati City Hall representatives, the tunnel should be built in the Giurgiulesti (to the border with Moldova), where it is estimated that will come out of the city bypass. The tunnel will have a length of 1.5 km and width will be built on the Danube.

  • Strategic position

Galati is located at the border with Moldova and Ukraine, 80 km from the Black Sea. Crossed by a major pan-European corridor. 7 – (Nuremberg – Vienna – Budapest – Bratislava – Belgrade – Drobeta – Vidin/Calafat – Giurgiu/Ruse – Galati – Black Sea). It is also surrounded by three rivers – the Danube and Siret and Prut rivers.

  • Free Zone Galati

  • The only software park in Romania

In Galati is located the only software park from Romania. Galati software park was inaugurated in March 2004 and has had from the beginning an occupancy rate of 100%.
